MISSION STATEMENT:

Huntsville Training Associates
is a small business that is dedicated to deliver professional hazmat training programs and services in a classroom environment and on-sites – where we come to you.

Our emergency response management and hazardous materials training faculty members, with strong communication skills and years of practical experience, have previously trained numerous achievement-oriented/career-enhancement professionals from organizations of all sizes and types.

Our training programs are developed for professional hazardous materials emergency responders - whether you are involved in management, supervision, or the working level in Fire Service (Military & Civilian), Law Enforcement, Emergency Medical, WMD CST, State National Guard Units, Protective Service (DoD, Treasury, DoJ), Customs & Border Protection, Immigration & Naturalization Service, Centers for Disease Control, HazMat Teams, Intelligence Units, Pre-Hospital Care (EMS), Trucking & Railroad Industry, Public Safety Agencies, Emergency Management, Manufacturing & Shipping, Plant & Safety Management, Anti-terrorism & Force Protection, USPS Emergency Management, Emergency Preparedness Management, FBI, Transportation Security Administration, and Federal Protective Service.

We also provide on-site group training where the customer is offered the opportunity to tailor courses to address the specific needs of his organization at his workplace. On-site presentations are more cost-effective and provide the benefit of convenient timing for multiple training sessions.

FACULTY MEMBERS:


Stephen L. Hermann was the Hazardous Materials Coordinator for a major state agency, and a Colonel in the Chemical Corps, National Guard and U.S. Army Reserve. He is past Commandant of the Arizona Military Academy, Arizona Army National Guard and was formerly the State Chemical Officer, and commanded a Cobra Attack Helicopter Battalion. His Bachelor of Science degree is in Explosives Technology and he is a graduate of the U.S. Naval School Explosive Ordnance Disposal, U.S. Army Command and General Staff College, the U.S. Army War College and is a Senior Executive Fellow of the John F. Kennedy School of Government, Harvard University. Mr. Hermann has published over 160 articles in all of the major police, fire, and environmental magazines. He was a technical advisor for Argonne National Laboratories and a consultant to Los Alamos National Laboratories. He has testified before subcommittees of both the U.S. House of Representatives and the U.S. Senate. He has guest lectured at the National Fire Academy. He is a Certified Homeland Security (Level V) and Certified Hazardous Materials Instructor.



William C. Patrick III has 50 years experience in the field of Biological Warfare, including seven years as Chief of Product Development Division, Biological Warfare Laboratories before the U.S. offensive program ended in 1972. In 1984, he was promoted to one of the most senior civilian positions at USAMRIID as Program Analysis Officer, a position he held until his retirement in 1986. Mr. Patrick has made numerous guest lecturing appearances at the National War College, Army War College, Air War College, MIT, CDC, and the National Academy of Science. He holds five U.S. patents pertaining to biological processes and equipment, and has authored 16 articles in the scientific literature as well as 98 major in-house Department of the Army publications. Mr. Patrick has performed contractual services for the Defense Intelligence Agency, CIA, FBI, U.S Secret Service, USAMRIID and other government institutions. He has appeared on all the major television networks as well as Canadian Broadcasting, the BBC, the History Channel, and the Discovery Channel. He has been awarded a CIA Meritorious Citation, and the Order of Military Medical Merit.



Dr. David R. Franz served as Commander of the U.S. Army Medical Research Institute of Infectious Diseases (USAMRIID) and as Deputy Commander of the U.S. Army Medical Research and Materiel Command during his 27 years on active duty. Dr. Franz served as Chief Inspector on three United Nations special commission biological warfare inspection missions to Iraq, and as technical advisor on long-term monitoring. He was Technical Editor for the Textbook of Military Medicine on Chemical and Biological Defense. His current committee appointments include the Defense Intelligence Agency Red Team Bio-Chem 2020 and the Defense Science Board for Biological Defense. He has been an invited speaker at nationally and internationally recognized organizations including the American Society for Microbiology, the National Academy of Sciences, Georgetown University, and the U.S. Military Academy at West Point. He holds a D.V.M. from Kansas State University and a Ph.D. in Physiology from Baylor College of Medicine. He is a resident graduate of the U.S. Army Command and General Staff College, a recipient of the U.S. Army Research and Development Achievement Award, the Order of Military Medical Merit and Legion of Merit.


Dr. Thomas Ditzler is a civilian psychologist with the Department of Defense. He is Director of Research for the Department of Psychiatry, Tripler Army Medical Center and is a Training Advisor and Chief of Curriculum Development for the Center of Excellence in Disaster Management and Humanitarian Assistance. He has published numerous articles on responder readiness enhancement, aid worker care, security and behavioral health issues in natural and complex disasters including terrorism. He graduated from Hillsdale College with a degree in psychology. He earned a master’s degree in education from the University of Michigan and completed his graduate work in psychology at Clayton University, earning his Ph.D. He completed training at the John F. Kennedy Special Warfare Center and School, the East West Center, the Air Force Special Operations School and the Central Intelligence Agency. From 1997 to 1999 he completed studies in Organizational Behavior at the University of London. Dr Ditzler is a fellow of the Royal Society of Medicine and the Royal Institute of Public Health in the United Kingdom and is a Companion of the Naval Order of the United States. His awards include the Commanding General's Award for Excellence, the Commendation for Exceptional Performance, the Superior Civilian Service Medal, and the Order of Military Medical Merit.


Dr. Joel Selanikio, MD, is the director of DataDyne.org, a public health mobile and web technology group.  Named by Forbes magazine as one of the most powerful innovators of 2009, Joel Selanikio is a winner of the 2009 Lemelson-MIT Award for Sustainability and the 2009 Wall Street Journal Technology Innovation Award for Healthcare IT. His work has been reported on by The Economist, The Wall Street Journal, the BBC, and the Washington Post, among others. He is a sought-after speaker, most recently presented at the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland.  A officer of the Public Health Service serving at the US Centers for Disease Control (CDC), Dr. Selanikio served as the Chief of Operations for the HHS Secretary's Emergency Command Center in the aftermath of 9/11, and has worked as a responder to numerous disasters around the world, including the 2005 Asian tsunami, for which he received the Haverford Award for Humanitarian Service. Dr. Selanikio holds a bachelor's degree from Haverford College, and an MD from Brown University, and is a graduate of the Epidemic Intelligence Service fellowship of the CDC. He continues to practice clinical pediatrics both as an Assistant Professor at Georgetown University and on the Emergency Response Team of the International Rescue Committee, and is a Fellow of the American Academy of Pediatrics.





Dr. Joseph J. Heck, D.O.,
currently serves as the Medical Director for the Southern Nevada Health District, providing medical oversight for the EMS system serving Las Vegas, Nevada and the surrounding area. He has served as Medical Director for the Casualty Care Research Center of the Uniformed Services University of the Health Sciences, Bethesda, Maryland. Dr. Heck is also a Nevada State Senator, representing Clark County Senatorial District No. 5. He is a fellow of both the American College of Osteopathic Emergency Physicians and The American College of Emergency Physicians. Dr. Heck is a Flight Surgeon in the United States Army Reserve where he has served since 1991, and has completed extensive training in Combat Casualty Care and the Medical Management of Chemical & Biological Casualties. Dr. Heck graduated from The Pennsylvania State University with a degree in Health Education/Sports Medicine, received his Doctor of Osteopathy from the Philadelphia College of Osteopathic Medicine, and completed his Emergency Medicine Residency at Albert Einstein Medical Center in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.



Dr. Patricia R. Hastings
is the Director, Combat Medic Training, Fort Sam Houston, TX, which has the mission of training the Combat Medic. She is responsible for the training of over 6,000 Soldier Medics in the Advanced Individual Training (AIT) environment. Colonel Hastings is a physician, a registered nurse and a paramedic. She was formerly the Medical Director of the Center of Excellence in Disaster Management, and Humanitarian Assistance, a World Health Organization Collaborative Center for civil-military cooperation. During the Disaster Fellowship at Madigan Army Medical Center, she was the Chief of the Disaster Assistance Response Team, which had responsibilities for nuclear, biologic and chemical responses. With the FEMA Urban Search and Rescue Team from Puget Sound, Dr. Hastings responded to the Northridge earthquake, the Oklahoma City bombing and the Olympic Games in Atlanta. Prior to her fellowship, Dr. Hastings served as the Medical Director for the State of Arizona, Office of Emergency Medical Services. She currently holds a Clinical Assistant Professor appointment to the Uniformed Services University of Health Sciences, Maryland and the John A. Burns School of Medicine, University of Hawaii.


LTC Thomas Crabtree

Dr. Thomas G. Crabtree, (COL Ret), Senior Medical Advisor, Consultant, received degrees from Harvard and   Stanford Universities. He did his general surgery training in San Francisco, California and Tucson, Arizona. After three years of worldwide practice as a general and trauma surgeon, Dr. Crabtree completed a plastic and reconstructive surgery fellowship in Washington, D.C. He now practices in Honolulu, Hawaii. In addition to his plastic surgery practice, Dr. Crabtree is an on-call trauma surgeon for the Pacific Regional Medical Command. He holds academic medical appointments with the John A. Burns School of medicine at the University of Hawaii and at the Uniformed Services University of Health Sciences. He serves on the Hawaii Medical Association Board of Governors and is President of the Hawaii Plastic Surgery Society. His disaster medicine and humanitarian related experience ranges from the San Francisco earthquake to a six-month tour with the United Nations in a MASH hospital in the Balkans to providing surgical relief to the victims of the recent Papua New Guinea Tsunami. Dr. Crabtree has worked with the Center of Excellence since 1997 and now heads the medical program since 2002.




Peter Probst, served with the CIA and the Office of the Secretary of Defense. After retirement, he established a private consultancy and joined the Washington-based Institute for the Study of Terrorism and Political Violence as its Vice-President and Director of Programs. He co-authored a major and provocative study, Terror-2000: The Future Face of Terrorism that in the wake of the events of 11 September has gained new currency. Mr. Probst is currently a member of the National Academy of Engineering Study Committee convened to prioritize critical national infrastructure vulnerabilities exploitable by terrorist groups and to develop strategies to mitigate such vulnerabilities. Mr. Probst served 20 years with the CIA and worked in Special Operations. A highly respected terrorism expert, he has been invited by private institutions, civic organizations, and governments to speak at numerous international conferences. Mr. Probst is a graduate of Columbia College and Columbia University where he received a B.A. in history and an M.A. in anthropology/archaeology. He served in the U.S. Air Force Intelligence Service from which he retired with a reserve rank of Lieutenant Colonel.



C. David Shepherd
is a senior security expert, practitioner, author, university instructor, retired FBI Special Agent, and expert advisor to the Department of Homeland Security on Critical Infrastructure Protection and Science and Technology. Prior to founding Readiness Resource Group, David served as the Executive Director of Security for The Venetian Resort Hotel Casino, Las Vegas, the fourth largest hotel in the world. At the Venetian, David was responsible for physical security, background investigations, terrorism, EMT coverage, construction security and special investigations. David now uses his deep understanding of the business and security threats to provide guidance and consulting services to government agencies, other resort and gaming businesses as well as product developers. David also spent 22 years in SWAT operations as Team Leader and Coordinator in domestic and foreign terrorism, kidnappings, extortions, fugitives, violent crimes, and narcotics. He is an instructor at University of Nevada, Las Vegas (UNLV) and the author of Preventive Measures: Is Your Company Ready? Are You? He has been seen on BBC, C-Span, Discovery Channel, Today Weekend, and the Congressional Subcommittee on Intelligence and Terrorism.


Michael Hagen recently retired as a hazardous materials enforcement officer with the Los Angeles Police Department, where he is now a Reserve Officer. He was a senior training officer in the hazardous materials unit whose duties include investigation of environmental crimes, hazardous materials transportation enforcement, training of officers in hazardous materials safety, and providing assistance to governmental entities in environmental compliance investigations. He has over 20 years of service, more than 15 years in hazardous materials transportation first responder’s incident command roles, and since 1989 has been assigned to the hazardous materials unit. Mr. Hagen is a state certified hazardous materials instructor, teaches at several community colleges and has conducted training for government and industry in hazardous materials transportation and response. He has attended the Transportation Safety Institute, California Specialized Training Institute and several Department of Energy schools. He holds a Bachelor of Arts degree from California Lutheran University and was the Local Enforcement Liaison Officer with U. S. DOT's Cooperative Hazardous Materials Enforcement Development (COHMED) program.


William A. Henle, CHMM, retired recently from Portland Fire and Rescue, as their Hazardous Materials Coordinator the last 18 years. He is a Certified Hazardous Materials Manager (CHMM), Certified Hazardous Materials Instructor, and has a B.A. degree in Education from Parsons College. He has responded to over 1,000 hazardous materials incidents, and was responsible for all hazardous materials response operations and training for the 700 person fire department, where he was also the Team Leader for the full-time Hazmat Response Team. He has provided specialty training for a local Explosives Disposal Unit (EDU), FBI (Oregon) plus other law enforcement and related agencies, and been a Presenter and Lecturer at various national hazardous materials conferences across the U.S. including the International Hazmat Teams Conference, the International Fire Instructors Conference, HazMat Explo and the Continuing Challenge. He has four years experience as an Adjunct Instructor for the National Fire Academy.
